this has been a song i’ve listened to basically every single day since i’ve been in denmark. claire boucher is just seriously killing it right now and a big thanks to jb for originally playing vanessa in the apartment (even though apparently she opened for lykke li when i saw her in may?). anyway, sorry for never blogging since i’m boring and sit on facebook when i’m on my computer but this weekend! promise! and i’ll even put up a mix of ~my time in denmark~ jams.

I posted this on my other tumblr awhile ago and just found it because this is legitimately what it’s like in Copenhagen. Seriously, the day it hits 40 degrees I will probably shed real tears.

I’M STILL HERE

so you guys probably forgot i was in denmark still right?! just kidding! i just really need to update this more. so i’ve officially been in copenhagen for two weeks. i’m all settled in here and feel really comfortable in the city. unfortunately, we got hit with some serious cold this week (like below twenty degrees) so i kind of holed up. BUT it’s supposed to go back into the thirties this week so i’m ready to restart my exploring of the city! i’m trying to think of the highlights of the last week…on friday i saw the danish punk band iceage in a warehouse and it was great and i also felt like i was back in brooklyn at 285 kent. we got extremely lost trying to get there though…public transportation, you’re not on my side! on that note, last night i went to a bar in vesterbro (a trendier area) with some friends and on my way home, i attempted to take the night bus for the first time from norreport station (an area close to DIS). well, i was on the bus for about an hour when i realized i was absolutely not going the right way! i saw some taxis stationed so i jumped off the bus and got in one. turns out, i had left copenhagen all together….so i had to pay 500 kroner to get back to my dorm. it was a hefty price to pay but i know better for next time to just ask and make sure i’m going the right way! i did get to see some highways in denmark though…? so that was interesting, and my bus driver was sympathetic about my slip up and says it happens to a lot of americans. i also saw a bus stop on fire! despite that major fail i still had a good weekend in copenhagen.

i felt like i was in a little bit of a lull for the second half of this week since it was so cold and i was opposed to doing anything outside my room or at DIS, but i’m going to take today to get reenergized and do some work in the library near by so i can use my afternoons for exploring! i have my first field studies on wednesday this week so i’ll be taking a walking tour of the places in the novel miss smilla’s feeling for snow for my scandinavian crime fiction class. then i’m off to western denmark for the weekend with my current trends in media class! i’m looking forward to seeing more of the country and getting to know some of the people in my program. i’ll also get to see a creative branding agency which i’m irrationally excited for since it’ll be an experience to compare it to the agencies i’ve worked at in america. i need to start planning trips but it’s just so hard when there’s so much to see in copenhagen already!

some of my favorite things in the city so far are finding bars that aren’t totally americanized, window shopping on osterbrogade (which i did on tuesday after class while listening to real estate’s days and it was a perfect afternoon), my commute to DIS, and being mistaken for a dane (good self-esteem booster). my not-so-favorite things are the weather and attempting to get home at night after going out (i am so bad at it). but i’m going to try and be super adventurous and do more writing in here so i will keep everyone posted! time to go to netto for groceries and by something i didn’t mean to by accident.

my dinner for the rest of the semester which consists of basmati rice, srachajhajhda and masala sauce, and cheese. no seriously if you read this blog and want to contribute easy meal suggestions i’d greatly appreciate it since i suck at cooking. also this is my room! and this is my unbrushed hair because i’m attempting to look danish!

quick update before class

i woke up at 6:30 this morning after having some strange dream about justin bieber and traveling (i’ve been getting the weirdest dreams here) and rachel harassed me about updating my blog so here it goes (miss you rachie and jealous of your costa rican weather):

  • have you guys heard of kinder surprise? they’re my favorite thing ever
  • i am going to be living off of rice
  • i went to malmo sweden on friday and went to a club called debaser (it was pixies themed) and saw the men - my first european show!
  • i like all of my classes so far but i’m pretty sure i’m dropping my fifth (philosophy class called making of the modern self - it seems really interesting but i suck at philosophy and kind of want to take it easy this semester)
  • i have to use a phone that makes me feel like i’m in middle school again
  • i’ve gotten kind of lost since i’ve been here but for the most part i’ve been able to navigate thanks to the bus and landmarks (that DIS scavenger hunt actually really helped)
  • have an 8:30 class is brutal but worth it when your professor is a qt
  • denmark is still cold
